SAFETY IN THE HEART
Edmonton’s downtown is truly the heart of our city. It’s a central gathering place that is host to tens of thousands of people living, working, playing, and studying every day, with hundreds of thousands more taking part in special events and festivals. A vibrant and welcoming core means a stronger city where Edmontonians can connect and thrive.
One of the most important elements of a healthy core is safety. I hear consistently from business owners, community members, non-profit leaders, and residents who are deeply invested in seeing our downtown area excel and who want to see a safer downtown for everyone.
City Council has heard those voices and made downtown safety a top priority over the past five years. I’ve put together a document that highlights the actions the City has taken, and the support we’re asking from our partners at the Provincial and Federal government.
I want this document to be a starting point for us to continue to have meaningful and impactful conversations around downtown safety that lead to tangible results for the community. It’s also a tool for you in terms of the steps you can take to help support safety, and to advocate for the help our downtown needs to address underlying housing, health, and safety gaps.
